Headmaster's Welcome

DEAR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES:
Welcome to Poly Prep Country Day School!
David B. Harman, Headmaster

We are delighted you are considering us.  It is our pleasure to assist you in the critically important journey you have embarked on to find the right school.

Independent schools cherish their autonomy and their own unique qualities, while often sharing common goals. Poly is distinctive, however, because we place character first, and because we truly value our remarkable mix of students and families. A fundamental part of a Poly education is learning to behave and act ethically and justly, and to value difference.

Our Mission

We're entering our 158th year as one of Brooklyn's most venerable and successful institutions.  Indeed, although we were founded in 1854, Poly Prep has retained our essential mission.  We prepare our graduates for college and life, while helping them to adapt to an ever-changing professional and personal environment.

Our Two Campuses

Of course, we are also blessed with two beautiful campuses—one in Dyker Heights and the other in Park Slope—whose exceptional classrooms, studios, laboratories, athletic fields, swimming pools, and open spaces support our myriad programs.  Indeed, both of our campuses ensure that Poly's approximately 1,000 students feel safe and comfortable enough to explore, grow, and change—personally and intellectually.

Our Faculty

Our outstanding faculty also ensure that our students gain the skills necessary to academic success. Just as importantly, as our students pursue excellence, both inside and outside the classroom, Poly continually imbues them with strong character and a sense of responsibility.

Educating The  Whole Child

Central to our country day school history and philosophy, Poly Prep believes very strongly in the education of the whole child. Academic, artistic, athletic, and human development programs ensure that students learn essential knowledge: critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, how to assimilate new information, and how to be good people capable of sound judgment and responsible decision making. We fervently believe that Poly prepares its students to be caring, compassionate, and competitive leaders and global citizens. We charge them not only with learning how to live in the world today, but with how to change it for the better.

Our Diversity

I like to say that Poly reflects the many faces not only of New York City, but of the world in which our students will work and live. Over time, the school has evolved from a small neighborhood school to one that draws from all over the city (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and even Queens), via our extensive bus transportation system.  Still, we are proud of our deep roots in Brooklyn, even as our alumni now work and live all over the United States and the world.

Visit Us!

We invite you to explore Poly via our Web site, and then come for a campus visit.  We hope to see you here soon!

SINCERELY YOURS,
