|Cross Country Runners Win Medals, Set Personal Bests at Mayor’s Cup|
The Poly Prep freshman girls’ cross country team placed third overall and six runners won individual medals as the Poly boys and girls cross country teams competed at the Mayor’s Cup Cross Country Championship on October 3 at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx.
Senior Julia McMahon placed fourth in the girl’s 2.5-mile varsity race, finishing with a time of 16:47.88, and freshman Emma Restrick ran a personal best at 18:13.49. The boys’ team also competed, with sophomores Ian Clayman and Willem Humes running their best times of the season and placing in the top 75 in a field of nearly 400 varsity runners.
Also medaling for the girls’ team were junior Mary Kate Nolan, and freshmen Nina Nahitchevansky, Bonnie Mai and Julie Aguirre.
“I’m very happy with their efforts,” first-year cross-country coach Adrien Ricci said. “They are progressing exactly as one should throughout the season.”
Ricci also noted that the Mayor’s Cup is unique for allowing freshmen to compete as a team. “To have the opportunity to race as a team, like Varsity has the privilege to do, really elevated their overall performance.”
Held annually in Van Courtlandt Park, the Mayor’s Cup features more than fifty New York-area secondary schools competing in 1.5 and 2.5 mile events.
