Poly’s New Novogratz Center for Athletics Has Its Opening Day on December 12

Ben Oliner Reports on “First-Ever Poly Prep Invitational Squash Tournament” and Top-Tier Division I NCAA Wrestling Meet Featuring UNC vs. West Point

By Ben Oliner, Assistant Director of Athletics
On Saturday, December 12, 2015, Poly’s brand new state-of-the-art Novogratz Center for Athletics opened its doors for its first day of competition!

While the building still awaits final approval for a Certificate of Occupancy from the New York Department of Buildings, Poly Prep was able to secure a temporary Special Events permit and host the first-ever Poly Prep Invitational Squash Tournament, as well as a top-tier Division I NCAA Wrestling meet featuring #16 University  of North Carolina vs. U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
At the Poly Invitational Squash tournament, over 80 students from nine boys’ and girls’ varsity high schools from four states competed on Poly’s nine courts at the school’s first-ever Invitational Varsity Team Tournament. Both Poly’s boys’ and girls’ teams loved being able to occupy the new space and host an event of this magnitude. The girls split their matches throughout the day, defeating Conestoga H.S. 4-3, and then falling to Blair. Poly’s Boys’ Blue Devils Squash team was able to win the tournament and keep the trophy on our Dyker Heights campus by winning two nail-biting 4-3 victories over both Conestoga H.S. and Darien H.S. and then finally cruising on to victory with a 7-0 defeat over Blair Academy.

The squash teams look forward to hosting many more events of this caliber and building many more great memories on these world-class squash courts throughout this season and beyond.
Meanwhile up the stairs on the mats, #16 UNC squeaked out an 18-14 victory over Army in a very high-level NCAA Wrestling meet that showcased the new facility and brought the top echelons of the sport to our Dyker Heights campus.
It was an amazing day at the Novogratz Center for Athletics and the start of many great memories and events to come!
