Notable Poly Prep Alumni Series

Joseph Dana Allen Library

The Poly Prep Notable Alumni Biographical Series launches on May 22, 2019 with a volume titled George Wallace Melville: Civil War Officer, Naval Engineer and Arctic Explorer by Amit Prakash. Please join us for a reception and talk by Dr. Prakash, former Poly history teacher (2013-16), now Visiting Assistant Professor at Middlebury College.
The series, written by Poly faculty under the aegis of the History Department, highlights the achievements of alumni spanning Poly's 150+ year history. Melville, Class of 1860, fought in one of the most important naval battles of the Civil War; survived the first attempt by the U.S. government to send men to the North Pole (of three lifeboat crews, only his survived); became the Chief Engineer of the U.S. Navy; and is largely credited with converting Navy ships from wooden vessels to steel.
