A First Day Story from Lower School

“When I think about the first day of school, everybody in the class was kind, they respected me and listened to me; the teachers made me feel comfortable and special.” –Carter L. ’36, Grade 2

What are the first days at a new school like? Every year, our community is enriched by the unique personalities, interests, and backgrounds of our newest members. We hope that every new student at Poly feels what Carter L. ’36 does—that Poly Prep is a home, a place where all students are welcomed and safe to be themselves. Choosing a new school is a decision that touches the whole family, and while learning is centered on the student, our school is made whole by the presence of our families as well. Below, the Maffei family shares their story of Carter’s first days at Poly.

Carter was thoughtful and reflective in answering how his first day at Poly was. “It feels like home,” he said with a quiet smile. Is there any answer more touching to two excited, lovingly anxious parents? Carter relayed how his teachers were ‘so kind’, how his Poly buddy, Aaarav, had checked in on his experience every day, how Bridget and Nico had welcomed and played with him, and how Ms. Faith gave the best hugs. The part that really got us was when Carter said how he felt he could be himself and how everyone seemed to like him that way—just as he was. Not gonna lie, Joel and I started crying at that point and Carter had to reassure, ‘It’s ok, guys. This is a happy thing.’

We chose Poly because it was as though the school itself embraced us, assuring us that our child would be cared for, nurtured and celebrated. How right we were! The warmth that radiates from every corner of the community has been overwhelming. We are thankful for the sense of belonging that Carter has found here and for the new chapter in our lives that is unfolding, filled with friendships, laughter and a shared sense of compassion. In short, we realize that we have only just begun our journey, however we are confident that Poly is not just the right place for Carter—it is a place where we all, as a family, have found a new home.” –The Maffei Family

When asked what he is most excited about this year, Carter didn’t hesitate: “I’m excited to make new friends.” With reading already his favorite part of the day, his joy and enthusiasm reflects what makes Poly Lower School so specialit’s a welcoming place of learning, laughter, and everything in between.
