After School

Overview

Poly's Lower School offers a full Extended Day Program. Supervised child care is available before and after school. There is also a variety of enrichment courses in the arts, sciences, and athletics for Nursery through Grade 4 students.

Early Bird

Early Bird takes place in the Big Room from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM, providing a warm welcome to students before the school day starts.

Early Bird is available to all Lower School students in Nursery to Grade 4. There is no cost for the Lower School's Early Bird program.

After-School Supervision

A full program of activities for students who wish to stay after school hours is available from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM. 
 
Students have time to play indoors and outdoors, complete their homework, and enjoy a healthy snack. 
 
The cost to enroll your child in the Regular After-School Program is $30/day. If your child is picked up after 6:00 PM, there is an additional $30 late fee. This is a drop-in program for students in Nursery to Grade 4.

After School Enrichment Classes

A variety of enrichment classes is available after school for Poly's Nursery through Grade 4 students. Classes are age appropriate and designed to provide exciting educational opportunities for exploring a wide array of interests, from cooking to tennis. Enrichment classes take place from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Each class meets once a week per trimester. Each year, we offer three sessions: fall, winter, and spring. Classes are taught by members of Poly's Lower School faculty or other outside vendors.

The cost of each class is typically $250 (unless otherwise noted) with 8 classes per trimester.

NEW: Park Slope Camp in June

Join us for June Camp, students will engage in activities including free play, cooking, arts and crafts, dance parties, sprinkler play on the playground as well as trips to the Prospect Park Zoo and Prospect Park Splash Pad. 

DATE: Weeks of June 17 and June 24
LOCATION: Poly Prep's Lower School Campus.
TIME: 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM on Mondays to Thursdays and 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Fridays.

  • Mondays - Junior Varsity Sports

    With Ms. Robb and Mr. Carr
    Kindergarten to Grade 1

    The Lower School’s most famous sister/brother duo is “teaming up” to bring you a J.V. Sports semester full of skill building, exercise, and fun. Based on the interests of the group, we will cover many of the classics, and a few new ones of our own invention.

    Good sportsmanship will be emphasized and a great time will be had by all!
  • Mondays - Creative Chefs

    With Evelyn Gomez
    Nursery to Kindergarten

    Come join us as we cook up everything from soup to cookies.  Enjoy your tasty treat in class or take it home to share with your family.  Students will learn recipes and take them home every week to make and enjoy with loved ones.
  • Mondays - Full STEAM Ahead

    Ms. Berg, Ms. Hunter
    Grade 2 to Grade 4
     
    On a rotational basis with Mrs. Berg, Ms. Hunter, and Ms. Smith, come discover how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math combine to make a fun, educational, and unforgettable experience! Employing gears, circuitry, marbles, dominoes, pulleys and more, we will be investigating engineering principles, such as chain reactions, propulsion, and centrifugal force, architecture, maker culture, simple machines, and the intersection of art and math!
  • Mondays - Weaving

    Grades 3 and 4
    With Ms. Zarou

    Students in grades 3 and 4 are invited to Weaving Tuesdays where we will explore the ancient art of weaving as well as contemporary applications. Students will learn basic hand weaving skills as they create friendship bracelets and weavings on looms.
  • Tuesdays - Slime Making Workshop

    Come get your hands ooey gooey as we make slime together. There are many ways to make slime, and in our Slime Making Workshop we will experiment with multiple recipes from Classic Slime to Glow in the Dark slime to Glitter Slime and Floam.
  • Tuesdays - Varsity Sports

    Varsity Sports will cover an array of games ranging from soccer and floor hockey to wiffleball and basketball. The mission of the class is to have fun and practice sports in an environment that emphasizes good sportsmanship. This class will allow students to compete in multiple games during each session.
  • Tuesdays - Tech Tuesdays

    Let your imagination be your guide while exploring the vast resources the Tech Lab has to offer. Build and program a MindStorm or WeDo robot, Design and 3D print, Laser Print, 3Doodle, Build a Raspberry Pi computer, Animation/Game Design in Scratch, Web Design, and Drones!
  • Tuesdays - Wiggle Worms

    Ready to let loose after a day of learning?  Come up to the dance studio to shake your wiggles out!  This class will be full of physical activity and will include movement, games, dance, yoga, and more!
  • Wednesdays - Ballet

    Nursery to Grade 4

    Ballet promotes good posture and flexibility.  Do you want to move with grace and develop poise?  Join our beginning ballet class.  Learn the basics of this beautiful form of artistic expression.
  • Wednesdays - Chess

    Running this program will be nationally ranked chess expert Fabio Botarelli, who has numerous years of teaching and active tournament experience. He offers a dynamic curriculum that covers the basic fundamentals of the game, tactics, positional theory, hypermodern theory, classical theory, and the three phases of the game, which include opening, middle game, and endgame theory.

    Knowing that the game of chess can be a rigorous mental exercise for people of all ages, he starts off his students with a simple conservative philosophy of the game, a strong emphasis on positional chess, and then gradually works his students into the rigors of tactical calculation and deep strategic thinking.
  • Wednesdays - Grade 1 to Grade 4 Tennis

    Players of all levels will receive instructional lessons in small groups. They will be assessed and placed into an appropriate group based on skill and ability. Lessons are designed to help balance self-esteem, discipline and learning in a fun and friendly environment. Students should wear sneakers and may bring their own racket.  Lessons will be held in Poly's Park Slope Campus.

    Video Star gives students an opportunity to direct, edit, and perform in their very own music videos!  In Video Star we learn to creatively document our musical performances or dances and experiment in a collaborative setting. Students will gain experience in videoing and editing techniques using iMovie, as well as learn skills in story boarding, sequencing, and directing.

  • Thursdays - NYC Habitats Kids

    NYC Habitat Kids aims to educate the next generation on their surrounding natural habitats and equip them with the knowledge to conserve the environment, all while having tons of fun! Through learning about our NYC habitats and the diversity of life that relies on them, we believe students will learn to value our green spaces and become more engaged stewards of the environment. The program will involve interactive educational lessons, creative performance art projects, and tons of arts and crafts!   • Thursdays - Puppetry

    Kindergarten to Grade 2

    The puppetry after school program focuses on the essential elements of puppetry and storytelling. Students will work with a variety of materials to build puppets such as hand and paper bag puppets, shadow puppets and rod puppets. They will then use these puppets to create and tell a short story. Students will also learn about the history of puppetry and the various types of puppetry.

    Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. Through games and physical activity, this class will promote interactive learning.  Children will learn about focus, taking risks, partner work, concentration, and problem solving.

  • Fridays - Run4Fun Prospect Park

    Run4Fun (www.run4funusa.org) promotes wellness mentally, physically, and socially through running with an emphasis on fun. The program runs in many schools throughout Brooklyn and the Bronx. The Run4Fun curriculum integrates running technique, nutritional tips, life skills, and team building activities in each session. Run4Fun sessions are designed for each age-group and include dynamic warm ups, age appropriate distance runs, fun running games, nutritional activities, a cool down, and finish with a Run4Fun cheer. Run4Fun youth runners will also have the opportunity to participate in races throughout the city.

    *For the spring trimester track program, the sessions will take place in the lower half of Prospect Park. At Poly's dismissal time, Run4Fun coaches will pick up the students and take them to the park.  This class will include students from other neighboring schools.  The class will run from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM with the option to pick up earlier from the park if needed.  Pick up will take place on the front steps of Poly at 6:00 PM.  Please do not hesitate to contact Bette if you have any questions.
  • Fridays - Spanish

    Nursery to Pre-Kindergarten

    The Spanish after school program is an immersive experience designed to give young learners an authentic introduction to the language. Using songs, games, puppetry, stories and hands-on activities, children will become accustomed to listening to and speaking Spanish. Children will develop basic conversational skills, express likes and dislikes, and learn basic vocabulary related to the activities and lessons. Materials will also be sent home to reinforce the language learned in class.
