Welcome to Poly's Lower School

2Housed on its own landmarked campus in beautiful Park Slope, Brooklyn, all of us—teachers, students, administrators, and parents—feel fortunate to be a part of such a vibrant neighborhood. The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library are all within walking distance, and with Prospect Park as our virtual front yard, our Lower School students have wonderful resources available throughout the school year. Our building itself, located at 50 Prospect Park West, has won awards for architectural restoration and it was the first LEED-certified school building in New York City.
3rd Graders painted and installed rain barrels on campus as part of the Ecology Action Team Project (2017).

Beyond the wonderful setting, it is the warm sense of community that is the Lower School’s most appreciated attribute. Teachers greet children each morning with a friendly smile at curbside drop-off and in the classroom. Since character is a fundamental part of the school’s mission, our students learn about making good choices and helping others throughout the school day. Older children meet with younger “buddies” frequently to read, play, and learn together. Each grade participates in an annual community service project and, frequently, our students decide which cause to support and actively shape our service projects, from inception to completion.

Each year, Poly’s Lower School hosts a cleanup of Prospect Park. It’s a fun day for families, students, and faculty to join together for this community service event. .
Our parents are vital members of our community, too. They support these service projects, and they volunteer in numerous other ways, such as chaperoning field trips, organizing school-wide fundraisers, serving as tour guides for admissions tours, and simply dropping into the classrooms to share family or holiday traditions. Since our students are so young, we rely on the presence of—and a partnership with—parents to ensure students get the most out of their Poly experience.
