“Every moment is a teachable moment, which means learning is a natural part of existing. Learning and growth isn’t always easy, but we can feel it when it is happening to us.”

English teacher Christy Hutchcraft earned an M.F.A. in playwriting from Columbia University. Her work has been staged at The Horace Mann Theater and The Cherry Lane Theater in Greenwich Village. Christy teaches The Writer’s Life, an Upper School creative writing course. Christy was Hallie Stephenson’s ’20 teacher in Grade 10. “I was in her creative writing class, as well as in her English class that year, and those experiences still remain as the backbone of my learning journey today,” Hallie says. “Since then, I have taken an independent study with her that allowed me to build more confidence as a writer than I ever thought I could. She has been my mentor throughout high school, never hesitating to spontaneously talk with me about my writing endeavors or spend hours editing my work. She has constantly supported me and made me feel like I could actually make a real career out of writing. In her classes, she offers insights that have changed my perceptions dramatically and strengthened my creative process. She is a considerate, understanding, and thoughtful teacher who is passionate about her work and passes on that same passion to her students.”
