Visit from South African Students

Students from the Westville School for Boys from Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, joined Upper School students here at Poly to learn about each other’s experiences. Science teacher Peter Rice, who has co-led our Study Away trips to South Africa, hosted this group for several years, providing Poly’s Upper School students with a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with peers from South Africa and learn more about their experiences. “This year, in addition to visiting classes, our guests joined a Poly U.S. History class for open, honest discussion about our respective national experiences with racism and legal segregation,” said Michal Hershkovitz, Assistant Head of School for Academics. “The conversation was inspiring, not least for what it revealed about the students’ ability to engage meaningfully with one another about historical injustice and its manifestations in the present.”
