In 2025, Poly was awarded the Customized Employment Award from the Consortium for Customized Employment and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities. The award recognizes employers for their commitment to individualized employment opportunities for people with disabilities, creating a more inclusive workplace where employees can thrive within multiple connected networks of support.

Job Path Partnership

Poly Prep’s partnership with Job Path began in 2015, introduced by Poly parent Wendy Banner P’20 to former Head of School David Harman. Job Path’s mission empowers individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities to make their own life choices and take on meaningful roles within their communities. Since his earliest days at the school, James Ogilvie, whose work is supported through Job Path, has become an integral part of Poly’s community. For over nine years, he has contributed across multiple departments, taking on roles that reflect his interests and enhancing student life through his dedication and versatility.

You might find Ogilvie working in the school store during campus events, welcoming students to the Joseph Dana Allen Library with a quiet nod or smile, or standing alongside members of the Chess Club where his role as co-advisor has deepened his personal interest in the game. A beacon of institutional knowledge and an engaged community member, he approaches each day with both his affable, “can-do” attitude and a mission to make a meaningful impact across school life. Ogilvie works closely with a variety of departments and has maintained a steady presence even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His love and enthusiasm for Poly is evident in his attention to detail, his eagerness to take on a wide range of responsibilities, and his ability to infuse his work with personal passion and purpose.

On the Path to a Decade at Poly

Starting at Poly in March 2016 as a part-time employee with the Technology Department, Ogilvie’s role has transformed through the years, reaching all corners of the Dyker Heights campus. He currently assists the Library and Communications departments with various tasks. Ogilvie also serves as a co-advisor for the Chess and Go club and the Middle School Neurodivergent Affinity Group. The expanded scope of his work at Poly is reflective of his colleagues’ vocal support and requests for collaboration, as well as a deep sense of inclusion in school life. He shared that from day one, he felt his work was appreciated. He also enjoys getting to know his colleagues over lunches. Ogilvie thanks his Job Path coaches for their support in his professional development as he has honed important skills related to time management, self-advocacy, and others.

Today, Ogilvie continues to be a familiar and steady presence at Poly and always strives to connect with colleagues. He shared that a great challenge he faced during his time at school was during COVID-19’s social distancing period. It was difficult for him to be away from the community, his colleagues, and the campus. However, this later fueled his work, serving as motivation during the re-opening of the school when he stepped up to support the library staff with safely disseminating materials to the outdoor, open-air classrooms of the time. His commitment to Poly and its community has never wavered.

“James is a valuable member of the library team whose work ethic and self-advocacy have been inspiring to witness. He’s not only a pleasure to be around, but an asset to the library. His dependability, initiative, and good humor are only a few reasons why we appreciate him. Whether it’s co-advising the Neurodivergent Affinity group, working with the Chess Club, or participating in a Senior Capstone panel, James is an active member of the community. He has consistently expanded his scope of work since joining Poly, starting in the Technology Department, and now working with Communications and the Library. James has exemplified the intelligence, imagination, and character described in our school’s mission. We’re all very proud that he has been acknowledged through this award, and even more proud to be his colleagues.” – The Joseph Dana Allen Library Staff: Ilona Chudner, Samantha Owen, Lisa Puleo, and Iman Stultz

DID YOU KNOW? Poly Prep was founded before Brooklyn was incorporated into the greater city of New York, with a difference of around 45 years? James Ogilvie shared this interesting fact about the school’s history during an interview about his career at Poly in late June 2025. Evidence that his interests have been fed through his work, including within the school’s archive over the years.
