Hailing from Delaware, Amurao picked up tennis after following his dad and big brother to the courts. He became a top flight USTA junior and the No. 1 singles player at notable prep school Archmere Academy. Even then he had a sense of a potential future in coaching by helping out with local youth and adult tennis programs. After playing tennis for and graduating from Division I Georgetown University, Amurao worked in the photography industry, before committing to tennis full time as a private instructor and coach at several New York City clubs and schools. He eventually became the general director and head of high performance at Brooklyn’s McCarren Tennis Center, before joining the Poly Athletics Department in early 2020. Amurao made an immediate impact with the tennis program during his first preseason with the teams. “I’m grateful to be part of the Poly family and I am excited to start working with this talented group of student-athletes,” he says.
The Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis teams train and compete on campus on six recently upgraded blue hard courts equipped with lighting and bench seating.
