“You don’t have to be the best to do your best.”

A world-ranked heptathlete, Kym Carter joined Poly as Athletic Director in 2022, bringing with her a distinguished background as an athlete, coach, and nonprofit director. As a three-sport high school phenom, Carter qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials in the high jump as a sophomore and set the national HS record as a senior. At University of Houston and Louisiana State University she was a five-time college All-American, won two NCAA team titles and six conference championships. A member of numerous U.S. track and field teams, Carter finished 11th in the 1992 Olympics in Spain and sixth place in the 1993 World Outdoor Championships in Germany. Carter ended that season ranked #1 in the U.S. and #8 in the world. She is also the former American record holder in the pentathlon, winning a silver medal in 1995, and a bronze medal in 1997 at World Indoors. Carter is committed to developing excellence in her student-athletes. Athletes she has trained have also realized their athletic goals and made it onto the podium in college, high school, and middle school. Carter was head coach at Notre Dame Academy, and Marlborough School and assistant coach at George Mason University and Notre Dame High School. A strong desire to give back to the community has led Carter to leadership roles outside of coaching. She has leant her expertise to numerous nonprofit organizations such as Carl Lewis Foundation, AmeriCorps VISTA.
