“While English Language Arts is my specialization, I’ve made it a point throughout my career as an educator that my subject area be informed by my interest and teaching experience in other subjects across the humanities (history, cultural studies, cinema studies). The subject of language and its literature/s are inextricably bound to the social. Hopefully, this underscores a passion for the study of literature that proves engaging and rewarding to my students.”

Paolo Javier joined Poly Prep as an Upper School English teacher in 2021. Paolo was born in the Philippines and grew up in Las Piñas, Metro Manila; Katonah, Westchester County; El-Ma’adi, Cairo; Burnaby and North Delta, Metro Vancouver. Hailing from a family of educators, he earned a BFA from the University of British Columbia, and an MFA (Poetry) and MAT (English Literature) from Bard College. A veteran educator, he has served as Visiting Associate Professor in the MFA Program of the University of Miami, and taught literature and writing at Columbia University, the New School, New York University, CUNY, and Rutgers University. He has also taught English Language Arts for New York City’s Department of Education, and served as Program Director of Poets House, a nationally renowned literary nonprofit. A devotee of comics and experimental cinema, Paolo lives with his family in western Queens, NYC.
