Creative Pitches at the Upper School Clubs Fair

The festive Upper School Clubs Fair returned to the sun-filled theater patio this year. Students were eager to explore the opportunities offered while others pitched their clubs and offered treats such as lollipops and KitKats as an added incentive to participate. Very enthusiastic club members invited fellow students to join the more than 40 clubs ranging from A Cappella to Girls Who Code to Student Government.

Leo Yihan Wang ‘23 staffed the Coffeehouse table with a 3D collage of his own creation for one of Poly’s most popular events. Wang said that the performances would once again be live this year. Club members help plan and put on the open mic shows for this “empowering event.” (Read about Virtual Coffeehouse during the pandemic.)

At the Cambodia Club table, Tasha Fonstein ‘22 and other club members signed up students to create a stronger connection with Poly’s sister school, the Mitapeap school in Cambodia, in hopes that our students will one day get to travel there as they have done in years past.

A beautiful red orange vase by Poly teacher Yonghwi Kim P’22 was displayed on the Ceramics Club table. Caleb Kim ‘22  will be leading the club and says that he learned a lot this summer working with his parents in Poly’s Summer Experience camp ceramics class.

Students stopped by the Epiphany step team table, the Sustainability Club display, and talked with members of Harmonics, the student-led a cappella group. Others were curious to learn more about a sign proclaiming SLOP EM, which turned out to be Student Led Opportunities at Poly for Entertainment and Music.

Jasmine Kaur ’22 held up a poster for Model UN and shared a table with Girls Who Code. She described Girls Who Code as “an empowering sisterhood” where girls can learn computer skills, which are vital these days. In Model UN, she said, students can learn more about politics and develop speaking skills. Last year in the virtual UN she won the award for Best Delegate.

She’s the First (STF) is a relatively new club. Student led, it has raised funds for girls’ education in developing countries. Lulu Timoney ’22 explained that the club provides a “safe and supportive space to talk.” Keyara Ahmadi ’22 is the founder of the club at Poly and said STF is a non-profit. This past year they had a virtual movie night featuring the film Little Women.

June Dorsch ’23 is a passionate voice for History Club and says it is a great way to develop researching skills, explore something new, and to make great friends. Members of the club won recognition in the National History Day competition this past year. (Read more about History Club’s achievements.
