Students Bring the Suspense in Christie’s Haunting Classic

One week before Halloween, eleven talented Upper School actors will leave audience members on the edge of their seats with their impressive performances in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. This adaptation of Christie’s bestselling novel is a masterclass in suspense, widely considered her most chilling and unforgettable mystery.

Christie sets the scene for our Grades 11 and 12 fall play. Ten strangers, each harboring a dark secret, are lured to a remote island under mysterious pretenses. Cut off from the mainland by a storm, they soon realize they have been marked for murder. As fear and suspicion mount, alliances crumble, and paranoia takes hold, the guests must confront not only the danger around them but also the shadows of their own pasts. With its gripping premise, eerie atmosphere, and shocking twists, And Then There Were None will draw the audience in with every twist and turn until its final, unforgettable revelation.

For the student actors, the play has been more than just a performance—it’s been a lesson in leadership, collaboration, and time management. Some have valued learning from Grade 12 mentors and the supportive theater community, while others have honed skills in balancing rehearsals with academics and college preparations. Together, their experiences highlight how theater cultivates both personal growth and teamwork.

Soleil Peña ’27, who plays General Mackenzie, reflects on the value of sharing this theatrical Poly Arts experience with Grade 12 students in their final year before graduation, “I’d like to highlight the leadership roles in the play. Half of our cast are seniors, which is something I’ve never experienced before—having such a large portion of the cast as mentors. Being able to rely on them, especially our director, Ms. [Mariko] Watt, has been such a meaningful part of the theater community I love. Theater is about coming together to create something, even through the difficult and frustrating moments. Maggie Cochran ’26, Tessa Cooper ’26, and Grayson Monacelli ’26 have truly supported our cast as the lead seniors of the project. We, along with the many fabulous staff members, have them to thank for helping ensure our success.”

Grayson Monacelli ’26

Grayson Monacelli ’26, who plays Vera Claythorne, reflects on the valuable time-management skills she has gained through working on the play, ultimately improving her approach to college applications. “[And Then There Were None] has taught me how to manage my time. During rehearsals, I’ve had to balance applying to college, homework, and memorizing lines and blocking. Learning how to break down the pages I need to memorize each night and prepare a little bit each day has taught me to manage my time more effectively for both school and college applications.”
