“My approach to shepherding our wonderful students at Poly encompasses developing broader and more significant relationships with an emphasis on mentoring, life-skills development, and social-emotional wellness. The opportunity to engage student cohorts throughout four years and strengthen impactful relationships with teachers, parents, and administrators is incredible!”

Alex Carter joined Poly in 2018 in the History Department. During his tenure, he has designed curriculum about American and African-American history, co-advised UMOJA, coached our golf team, worked with Admissions to introduce the school to prospective families, and collaborated on 2022’s inaugural HBCU week. After graduating with honors in Political Science from Alabama State University, he received his Ph.D. in Afro-American Studies in 2021 from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he was commended for outstanding feminist scholarship. In 2013, he was awarded a Fulbright travel grant and a Visiting Scholar at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He also received Poly’s Head of School’s annual Teaching Award in 2019. In 2022, he was selected to join the Upper School Dean team.

Alex, who grew up in Washington, D.C., said his love of history comes from hearing his grandmother’s stories and reading The Washington Post to her when he was a child. It gave him a perspective on the wider world. Alex was also a Division I golfer at Alabama State University.
