“I love finding a way to engage students who might not think of themselves as ‘musicians.’ Making music is a human endeavor, and having the skills and understanding to do it with confidence is everyone’s right.”
Director of Music Dan Doughty, a native of Iowa, has been inspiring young people to make beautiful vocal music at Poly since 2006. As long as he can remember, Dan wanted to be a singer and to inspire students to love music as much as he does. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Westminster College, a Master of Arts in Music Education from Brooklyn College, and Kodaly Certification from New York University. Dan teaches Middle School general music, Grades 7-12 choirs, and is the Musical Director for the annual Upper School musical. Through games, active learning, and humor, Dan engages students of all skill and experience levels and gives them the tools to be capable, expressive musicians. As Director of Music, Dan oversees and supports N-12 music programs and faculty, with particular attention to the transition between the Lower School and the Dyker Heights campus, co-curricular opportunities, such as our Poly Conservatory program, and developing opportunities that continue to challenge and inspire our students and build Poly’s Music Program.
