John Rearick has been a vital part of the English Department since 1996. John earned a bachelor’s in English from Columbia College, Columbia University; an M.F.A. in fiction writing from University of Virginia; and a master’s from the Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University. John believes, “Writing and reading are simultaneously incredibly important and potentially subversive activities. Writing allows you not only to express yourself, but also to figure out what you want to express in the first place. It involves a great deal of ‘risky’ self-exploration. Reading requires attention, discernment, and, often, quiet, which are the very things that modern life wants to remove from our existence.” He has written two books of plays based on mythology published by Scholastic. John has also received numerous grants for professional study from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
