“While I have loved working with all the students who have passed through my classroom over the years, the community of teachers I work with and the support and friendship they provide continues to be a highlight of working at Poly.”

Phoebe Aberlin-Ruiz P’30 teaches Middle School health classes, as well as Grades 7 and 8 Latin. She has taught at Poly since 2003. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College and a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. “It certainly can be challenging to teach a language that is not spoken anymore in a 21st-century classroom,” Phoebe says. This includes looking at Latin’s connection to English grammar to help support student writing in other classes and finding all the ways Latin connects to other subjects, such as terms in science and math, and words in the Constitution. “I try my best to make Latin relevant to their everyday lives. I have had a couple students earn perfect scores on the National Latin Exam throughout the years, and sharing in their joy and pride for their accomplishment has certainly been a highlight. In her Middle School health classes, Phoebe says, “The biggest challenge is keeping up with the constant changes that happen in the health world so that I know that I am arming the students with the best and most up-to-date information so they can make the healthiest decisions possible.”
